The City of Clermont-Ferrand

     Clermont-Ferrand is a city of France, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with a population of 141,569 (2012). Its metropolitan area had 467,178 inhabitants at the 2011 census. It is the prefecture (capital) of the Puy-de-Dôme department. Clermont-Ferrand sits on the plain of Limagne in the Massif Central and is surrounded by a major industrial area. The city is famous for the chain of volcanoes. The famous dormant volcano Puy de Dôme (10 kilometres (6 miles) from the city) is one of the highest of these and is well-known for the telecommunication antennas that sit on its top and are visible from far away.

Club CO2


The ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) founded Club CO2 in 2002 with the support of the IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN - formerly French Petroleum Institute) and BRGM (Bureau of Geological and Mineral Research) as administrators. With the ADEME as Chairman, the Club brings together the actors of the industrial world and of research – 30 members in total.

      A key element in the organization of French research in the field of carbon capture and storage, it serves as a response to the need of a more effective management for national efforts, while creating better public visibility. The members of the Club are all key players in the industry, research and development.

As a clearinghouse for information, dialogue and good practices among its members on CCUS research and technological developments, the Club encourages cooperation at a national level between public and private sectors, and several research projects have since then been initiated under its tutelage.

GdR Thermodynamique 

     The research group "Thermodynamique Moléculaire et des Procédés" (GDR CNRS 3541) was created in 2012. Its objectives are multiple : give a link to the thermodynamic community, from molecular thermodynamics, to process engineering, from experiments to molecular simulation, and from equilibrium to non-equilibrium states.  The idea is to promote research subjects at the limit of the knowledge as a think tank for building new collaborative projects. It also organize experimental platforms through an exhaustive thermodynamic method database. GdR Thermodynamique also contributes to formation in thermodynamics at master and doctorate levels and for professionals through continuous formation. It promotes also the link between industrials and academics through the Industrial Club.


  Established in 1873, the Société française de physique (SFP) is a recognized association of public utility whose mission is to represent the community of French physicists: researchers, teachers, high school and college professors, students, doctoral students, post-doctoral students and engineers. The missions are promoting the dissemination of knowledge, Scientists to the community of Physicists, the general public and schoolchildren, stimulating reflection and scientific progress, supporting scientific excellence, and representing physics in political and institutional realm.

Société Chimique de France

The Société Chimique de France (SCF) is a learned society and professional association founded in 1857 to represent the interests of French chemists in a variety of ways in local, national and international contexts. SCF count for about 5000 members, and is structured in 56 unities: 9 scientific divisions, 16 thematic groups, 15 regional sections and youth clubs.

 The Clermont-Ferrand Chemistry Institute (ICCF) was formed in 2012 by the merger of four CNRS-Blaise Pascal University. The research units were combined and one team from the School of Chemistry of Clermont-Ferrand was established. The activities of ICCF are divided into 6 teams, mainly following a disciplinary organization: Inorganic Materials (MI), Photochemistry, Molecular Interactions and Thermodynamics (TIM), Biocatalysis & Metabolism (BIOMETA), Organic & Medicinal Chemistry (COM), and Materials for Health (MPS). Three interdisciplinary areas allow the teams of ICCF to work together on collaborative research, namely Environmental Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, and Chemistry for Life Sciences.  

The National Center for Scientific Research

      With over 32,000 researchers, engineers and technicians, CNRS is the largest European research organization. Its dynamic and ambitious international policy helps to strengthen its worldwide influence. CNRS supports highly-structuring projects — in particular through European and International Associated Laboratories, International Joint Units, European Research Networks and International Programs for Scientific Cooperation, which significantly contribute to its attractiveness.
